Scope and Contents

This record group contains records created and maintained by the South Dakota Department of Education and Cultural Affairs and includes meeting minutes, photographs, publications, correspondence, audio recordings of speeches and presentations, videotape recordings, grant files, school building specifications, budgets and other financial reports, architectural drawings of historic buildings, administrative subject files, posters, and annual reports.

Administrative History
The State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO) was created in to comply with the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966 (Public Law 89-665) and currently manages the National Register of Historic Places program of the National Park Service in South Dakota. The program surveys, inventories, and registers historical properties; monitors state, federal, and local government activities which affect cultural and historic resources; provides advice on preservation methods; promotes public education on historical properties; and supports municipal and county historic preservation commissions to advance the state's economic, social, and educational objectives.
