Scope and Contents

This accession contains a copy of the "Fare Thee West" film on 16mm color film, VHS tape, and DVD. The film is approximately 28 minutes long.

"Fare Thee West" is a promotional film created by the Publicity Division of the Department of HIghways in 1961. It emphasizes outdoor activities and locations in South Dakota, and was shown to groups to promote tourism in South Dakota. The film also contains extensive footage of “How the West Was Won” filming on-location in South Dakota. Scenes shot in Custer State Park show director George Marshall working with stars Richard Widmark, Henry Fonda and George Peppard.

In 2005 the film was sent out for conservation work, and the VHS and DVD copies were created.
