Scope and Contents

Contains files pertaining to the Black Hills Area Transportation Study for the years 1950-1976. The results of the study were to be used to create, in cooperation with the U.S. Department of Transportation Federal Highway Administration, a realistic plan for the development of a future highway network for the Black Hills area in southwestern South Dakota. The feasibility of other transportation options, including a monorail system to serve the Mouth Rushmore National Memorial, was also explored. Records within the files include procedural memoranda, operational plans, correspondence, traffic zone maps, South Dakota State Highway Commission state-wide highway planning surveys, committee meeting minutes, and tourism statistics.
