Administrative History

The South Dakota Department of Transportation is responsible for the approximately 1800 bridges on the State Trunk Highway System (for definition, see SDCL 31-4-1). This responsibility includes the hydraulic and structural design and plans preparation for new bridges, large culverts, and other highway related structures. It also includes analysis, rating, overload analysis, oversight for condition inspection, and design of rehabilitation plans for existing structures and construction engineering support services for all bridges and structure projects on the State Trunk Highway System. In addition, the Depart of Transportation provides technical design guidance and construction engineering support services for the approximately 4000 bridges that are on the local government and county systems in South Dakota. South Dakota's bridges are managed and inspected in cooperation with the Federal Highway Administration. Inspections for SDDOT owned bridges are conducted by South Dakota Department of Transportation staff. All state and local bridges are required by the Federal Government to be inspected every two years, except where federal exceptions are granted. The South Dakota Department of Transportation provides annual inspections on all Missouri River and other critical bridges, while local governments are responsible for the management of bridges on their inventory.
