Administrative History

The Division of Game and Fish was responsible for managing game and nongame wildlife, fish resources, and associated habitats for sustained and equitable use. The division also carried out extensive research activities into new methods of wildlife management, operated a major trout hatchery, and enforced game, fish, and boating regulations through conservation officers. The division was organized on the basis of five management and research sections. The central staff located in Pierre consisted of a game specialist, land specialist, fishery specialist, and law enforcement specialist responsible for providing technical expertise to all regional offices.

The Division of Game and Fish was renamed the Division of Wildlife circa 1979 and continues to operate within the department, performing functions similar to those of its predecessor.
