Scope and Contents
This record group contains records created and/or maintained by the South Dakota Secretary of State and includes accounting ledgers; county organization records; corporation annual reports; domestic and foreign incorporation records; trademark registration applications and certificates; notary public applications, oaths, and bonds; lobbyist registers; election returns; political party records; executive appointments, orders, and proclamations; and state board and commission meeting minutes and correspondence.

The office of the Secretary of State was established in the South Dakota state constitution of 1889 (Article IV, Section 12). The duties of the office were first enumerated in the Session Laws of 1891 (Chapter 105, Section 1), with additional duties later added at various legislative sessions. The current duties of the Secretary of State are outlined in SDCL 1-8-1 (1-9).
