Scope and Contents

This record group contains records created and maintained by the South Dakota Department of Education and Cultural Affairs and includes meeting minutes, photographs, publications, correspondence, audio recordings of speeches and presentations, videotape recordings, grant files, school building specifications, budgets and other financial reports, architectural drawings of historic buildings, administrative subject files, posters, and annual reports.

Administrative History

The Department of Education and Cultural Affairs consisted of two primary divisions: the Division of Education, which was responsible for all state elementary, secondary, and post-secondary programs, and the Division Cultural Affairs, which included the State Arts Council and the State Historical Society. In 2003, the department was renamed the Department of Education and, with the exception of the Office of the State Library, the agencies within the Division of Cultural Affairs were transferred to Department of Tourism and State Development (Executive Reorganization Order No. 2003-01).
