Administrative History

The Department of Public Welfare was created by the State Legislature in 1935 to provide aid to the needy, and was overseen by the Public Welfare Commission. From 1937 to 1949, it was replaced by the Department of Social Security. However, in 1949 the Department of Public Welfare was reinstated and continued to operate until 1973, when its functions were transferred to the newly created Department of Social Services.
