This series contains the school census reports for the districts within both Jackson and Washabaugh counties from 1916 to 1978 with the majority of the reports coming from Jackson County. As these are the reports sent to the Department of School and Public land many contain only the student’s name, age and parent’s name but later reports (those after 1945) may contain information on student mental and physical disabilities.

Scope and Contents This series contains Mothers’ Pension records filed with the Jackson County Clerk of Courts between 1915 and 1933. Passed in 1913, the South Dakota Mothers’ Pension Law provided monetary support to poor mothers whose husbands were deceased, imprisoned, or permanently disabled by reasons of physical or mental infirmity. Washabaugh County was attached to Jackson County for judicial and administrative purposes for many years before officially being absorbed into the county in 1983....
